ASC Committee on Student Mental Health and Wellbeing
In 2019, the College of Arts and Sciences established a Committee on Student Mental Health and Wellness. Members of this committee include faculty, staff, undergraduate students, and graduate students.
Mission Statement
Foster a culture of mental health and wellbeing among ASC students by curating and sustaining resources; facilitating communication between and among extant student-facing organizations and leaders; and, when necessary, leading new initiatives that respond to local and immediate student needs.
Goals
- Create and sustain channels of communication and care coalitions between and among representatives from: ASC undergraduate and graduate student bodies; centers and institutes who serve ASC students; instructors and staff who regularly interact with ASC students; and other stakeholders who attend to ASC students’ mental health and wellbeing.
- Destigmatize matters of mental health and wellbeing among ASC students by normalizing conversations about mental health and making visible the resources that exist to support students’ wellbeing.
- Promoting and/or raising awareness with ASC students (and, when appropriate, staff and faculty) about the wide range of mental health and wellbeing resources already offered by various university communities.
- Partner with college leadership in imagining sustainable ways to meet ASC students’ mental health and wellbeing needs.
Award Overview
The ASC Committee on Student Mental Health and Wellbeing invites nominations for its inaugural ASC Student Wellbeing Advocate Award. This award recognizes individuals and/or student organizations affiliated with ASC who go above and beyond to create a culture that values student wellbeing and/or student mental health. This award celebrates excellent advocates for student wellbeing throughout the College of Arts and Sciences. Individuals and organizations nominated for this award should excel at promoting and prioritizing student wellbeing in their classrooms, departmental communities, and/or university work. By developing this award, we seek to illuminate forces for good in the college, particularly those who foster an environment where students’ wellbeing can thrive.
